Episode 31: Self Love and Releasing Shame with Nica Selvaggio
Nica Selvaggio was adopted as a young child and came to believe that worthiness was dependant upon being perfect. Nica, who identifies as a non-binary queer human, shares how the unconscious shame, rage and grief of this trauma of objectification led to a decade-long eating disorder.
Now a therapist in long-term recovery, Nica has crafted a life centered around profound self kindness with daily, holistic practices that help build acceptance, safety and self love.
Nica explains how using dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a type of cognitive behavioral therapy, can help heal traumatized nervous systems and create the ability to stay present, regulate emotions, cope healthily with stress, and improve relationships. Nica also talks with Taryn about how the death of her birth mother led to a sex addiction and, eventually, to a deeper recovery.
